Comparative Media History: An Introduction: 1789 to the PresentBy Jane L. Chapman

Comparative Media History is a unique thematic textbook which introduces students to the key ideas underpinning media development. It is an essential first step to a better understanding of both the media industry today and the way in which it evolved over time.

The textbook compares developments and influences from a broad perspective, highlighting and contrasting different countries, industries and periods of history in order to encourage an understanding of cause and effect. In a style which is clear, accessible and provocative, Jane Chapman argues that most of the roots of today's media - even the globalizing impulse - lie in the late 18th and 19th centuries. The book emphasises continuity and certain decisive factors such as the social use of technology, the character of the institutions in which it is applied and the political approach of the specific countries involved.

The comparative element to this book, both across countries and industries, will enable students to reflect on key issues in media studies, including those of diversity, form, method and choice, both past and present. It will become an essential text for any student of the media and its history.

Review
"The user-friendly text—with ‘summaries’ and ‘conclusions’ at intervals—will help students to think for themselves. Meanwhile, general readers will find this a clear introduction to a field of history too significant to be left solely to the specialists."
Donald Read, English Historical Review

"In a feat of compression and erudite conciseness, Comparative Media History ranges across several continents and over two centuries of media history to trace the emergence of current international media institutions from past historical traditions. A brilliant textbook for media students, to be ranked alongside Asa Briggs and Peter Burke’s A Social History of the Media as a key introduction to comparative media studies."
David Finkelstein, Queen Margaret University College, Edinburgh

"Comparing developments in seven media industries, five countries and across time, this invaluable book's depth and scope seem unmatched in its field. The book promises to reshape thinking and become a touchstone for future research in media history. Indeed, rarely has a book come across my desk that seemed so likely to so profoundly affect scholarship in a field".
Hazel Dicken-Garcia, University of Minnesota

Brick, by William Hall, has outstanding photography. Unfortunately that is about the only redeeming quality. The overwhelming majority of the book consists of photos of otherworldly brick buildings in faraway places but not much more. There is nothing on bonding types, polychromy, or the craft of laying brick. Nothing on vernacular buildings, nothing on the science of brick beyond a few general observations. This is more of a fantastically produced vacation photo book than it is any sort of defining volume chronicling man's long and complicated relationship with brick. If you want a coffee table book of pretty structures made of brick, then by all means buy it. But if you're looking for anything more than that, pass.

Brick is beautiful. I also bought and recommend concrete, and tend to seek anything about the architecture of cabins, but brick is beautifully photographed in all its diversity; some of it exquisitely soft and organic looking. It has this look of returning to the earth, and the choices Mr. Hall puts on display celebrate it. Nice binding and layout as well. Easily worth the bucks.

Beautiful book. Amazing how something as simple as a brick has such an interesting story.

ok

Magnificent book superbly designed with graceful, succinct project descriptions. Hard to find such insightful treatment of a generally ignored but honest building material.

It was the famous architect, Louis Khan, who once carried on a famous dialogue with a brick, asking it what it wanted to be. This book turns that dialogue on its end. It is a wonderfully large book with excellent, large photographs of brick masonry primarily expressed in pure geometric constructions, mostly contemporary but also spread over the centuries. If you are looking for excellent examples of intricate brick patterning and bonding techniques, this is not the book for you. It shows the power of brick when used to create large, monolithic structures which actually have little or nothing to do with architectural function and everything to do with architectural form. Louis Sullivan, famed for his statement, "Form follows function". would be quite appalled. This is the book of brick for art's sake.

Beautiful pictures!

nice book, with a lot of big scenes. Perhaps I would had like to se more details and back corners of buildings
